Theme: Up
Growing up.
Antonio measures the height of his boys on the wall. The older
brother, Vincent is shorter than his younger brother Anton.
Vincent is not measuring up.
Vincent receives a leg surgery to increase his height, so
that he is standing taller than before. This is symbolic representation
of Vincent’s beginning of achieving higher self.
Looking up
There are numerous rocket launches in the film. His goal to
go “up” is shown every time he looks up; he’s
“the only one who watches every one of them[the launches].”
After a while, Irene also looks up.
“I see that I’m not the only one who looks up
every time there’s a launch.” - Jerome.
When Vincent has to rescue his brother from drowning the
second time, Vincent looks up the sky and sees the stars as
the clouds clears. (See concealing/revealing)
Going Up
All spacecraft launches goes up into the sky. And finally,
Jerome actually goes up in the space at the end, and looks
down at the Earth.
“I’m going up.” - Jerome
Higher self
Vincent becomes Jerome, and he is able to inspire others and
made them open their eyes to possibilities. He achieves his
dream of going to space and although Vincent dies, Jerome
lives on in a form greater than us, something that lives in
heart of others.
